The final in sight for new Siam Recreation area – in Gran Canaria!

-

WOLFGANG Kiessling, President of the Loro Park Team, has been trying for at least 6 years to build what was described as Europe’ s biggest water park, within Gran Canaria.

The initial Siam Park was actually recommended more than 15 years ago, but Gran Canaria’ s red tape and bureaucracy, it seems, led to the first park opening within Tenerife in 2008.

That’ s where his effective, if sometimes controversial, parrot recreation area zoo has been operating since 1972.   And that has grown 10-fold in dimensions, now covering more than 33 miles.

After securing the 2013 Gran Canaria land cope with the aristocratic Del Castillo household, and, a year later, clearing exactly what appeared to be the last administrative hurdles using the Island Water Board and The spanish language, state-owned lands, Kiessling felt certain he had finally secured the site required.

He even expected his finished € 100m milestone attraction would probably complete construction inside two years.

But it appears that the battle to get this main tourist attraction built is still definately not over, with several groups in opposition to the development, and tying-up the particular project in court cases plus administrative objections for several years.

Works to channel the El Veril ravine started in 2017, as a

pre-requisite to the park’ h construction. But a storm within a tea-cup about “ aboriginal seashell remains” led to a public vomited between the local Mayor and the island’ s President.

After that, what appeared to be a moving from the goalposts, the local council changed the by-laws to demand a further € 2m extra to the project’ h originally-agreed budget, to develop public streets on the perimeter of the site, with out which the Town Hall would will not grant the final works licence, which may allow the project to begin.

Meanwhile, lots of acrimony and finger-pointing ensued. At last year’ s travel and leisure fair FITUR, Grupos Loro Recreation area said they were only awaiting the particular San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Hall, and that they were ready to start construction.

But one more public spat resulted in a courtroom case, with the developer accusing the neighborhood administration of contravening the group’ s fundamental rights.

Although the judgement, last October, failed to agree with this view, the determine clearly stated that the local council seemed to have been obstructive, and been pulling their feet, purposefully.

The Spanish state had currently stepped in, claiming dominion more than parts of the land they nevertheless own, and demanding clarification associated with what monies they would be due for the project.

Many seemed lost! And only last week, Kiessling claimed to have lost his inspiration, somewhat, saying he had already invested € 20m and still had simply no licence to begin work.

Now, though, with the 2020 business fair Fitur completed, a positive sparkle has been put on the entire affair.

According to news agency EFE, following a meeting last week with the brand new President of the Canary Islands Government, Á ngel Ví ctor Torres (PSOE), the President of the Cabildo sobre Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales (NC), and the new Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Conchi Narvá ez (PSOE), Kiessling says he’s “ reached an agreement to find a method to eliminate the difficulties in the construction from the park”, and hopes that the task can begin this year.

The particular German-born business man has pressured that Loro Park Group provides always followed all steps required by the various administrations “ 100%”, and that they are now continuing to work upon resolving “ this difficult scenario in which the previous government of San Bartolomé has put us”.

The final project, he says, may total around € 120 mil in the end, and will create 600 work opportunities, as well as providing a significant tourist appeal for the Playa del Inglé s i9000 and Maspalomas area.

Christoph Kiessling, his son plus Vice President of the Loro Zona group, has said that since this year, they have invested “ around € 20m” in this project, from once the search for the site and preparation from the first plans for the park started.

He added: “ We have always envisioned that the structure of the park could be done inside two years, although it could extend in order to up to two-and-a-half years. ”
