Verdi’ s La Traviata reimagined with cast and orchestra putting on face masks
The opening scenes of merriment have taken on a sombre tone, with all the chorus clad in black and white plus spaced exactly 2 metres aside. Minutes into the staging of Una Traviata, the surgical masks appear, timed with the rising notes of the orchestra led by a conductor standing up behind a plastic screen.
Spain’ s Teatro Genuine will reopen its doors towards the public on Wednesday, becoming among the world’ s first opera homes to return to the stage with a production which includes a chorus, orchestra and soloists right after months of lockdown. On offer is definitely Verdi’ s La Traviata, modified to reflect life in the moments of Covid-19.
