The Spanish federal government says the country’s top prosecutor has died in Argentina .

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted the government*s condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of chief prosecutor Jose Manuel Maza on Saturday evening.

The country *s private Europa Push news agency and other media shops reported that Maza died Sunday in a Buenos Aires hospital in which he had been admitted for an unspecified irritation.

The 66-year-old Maza most recently led the investigation towards ousted members of the Catalonia region’s government for alleged rebellion, sedition and embezzlement.

The particular investigation was launched as the regional govt held an independence referendum that will Spanish courts had ruled unlawful and after Catalan lawmakers declared the location as a republic separate from The country of spain on Oct. 27.
